Q. Why do we need a good salt in our diet?
A. The best biological evidence of this is that our tears, sweat and blood are salty and we are born in a saline solution. There is a physiological identity between the human blood plasma and sea water. When we consume a good quality well balanced Sea Salt we replenish our bodies with essential minerals and trace elements that have been striped from refined salt.
Q. What is Iodised Salt?
A. Iodised salt is Sodium Chloride with a synthetic form of Iodine added called "Potassium Iodate". As the case with all foods, we do not recommend any additive as a substitute for the real thing.
Q. Does SALT of the EARTH Sea Salt contain Iodine?
A. Yes, Hand Harvested Sea Salt comes with a small natural trace element of Iodine. We believe the richest natural source of Iodine is through Wakame (Sea vegetable) or Seafood.
Please refer to Iodine: Why you need it, why you can't live without it By Dr David Brownstein.
Why check your iodine levels?Low iodine levels can zap your energy and make you feel tired, edgy and worn out. Low iodine levels can even prevent you from getting a good night's sleep. Before you go to your doctor with complaints of tossing and turning all night, aches and pains, and just feeling "blah," you may want to perform this self-test.Because the symptoms of an iodine deficiency are classically identical to so many other illnesses (like depression, stress, chronic fatigue, or fibro myalgia,) many doctors either misdiagnose it or miss it completely and tell you there is nothing wrong.
Why are iodine levels so important?Low levels of iodine mean your thyroid isn't functioning properly. The thyroid helps balance hormones, regulate heartbeats, stabilize cholesterol, maintain weight control, encourage muscle growth, keep menstrual cycles regular, provide energy, and even helps you keep a positive mental attitude.Women are naturally prone to iodine deficiencies. That's because the thyroid gland in women is twice as large as in men -- so under normal circumstances, women need more iodine. However, when women are under stress, the need for iodine can double or triple. Yet the foods we eat contain less and less dietary iodine.
Two thirds of the body's iodine is found in the thyroid gland. One of the best ways to boost your iodine levels is to add sea vegetables to your diet. Just one teaspoon of sea vegetables a day can help you regain normal iodine levels. Incorporating seafood and fish into your diet can also help. Other foods that contain iodine are eggs and dairy products, including milk, cheese and yogurt, onions, radishes, and watercress. Some foods, called goitrogens, should be omitted for awhile as they hinder iodine utilization. These included kale, cabbage, peanuts, soy flour, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, kohlrabi and turnips.
To reactivate the thyroid gland, tyrosine, iodine, zinc, copper and selenium are needed so make sure that foods containing these nutrients are included in your diet.
Q. Where Should I store my SALT of the EARTH Sea Salt?
A. You can store it in it's own resealable packaging or any air-tight container. Keep in the pantry out of direct sunlight or best refridgerated in a humid climate.
Q. Why are Sea Salt crystals moist?
A. Hand Harvested Sea Salt comes from the evaporation of salt water. As this is an natural product no anti-caking agents (aluminium silicate) are added, therefore, Sea Salt will naturally attract moisture. Moist crystals are fine to use in cooking, however, remember to slightly dry your coarse crystals prior to filling your grinder.
Q. Why should I choose SALT of the EARTH Sea Salt?
A. Quite Simply, at SALT of the EARTH we don't just import the cheapest Sea Salt available and print the word "CERTIFIED" on the pack...we only buy the very best hand-harvested, chemical-free Sea Salt available. Our criteria must include the pristine atmospherics of the region, hygienic conditions of the suppliers export facilities and the method used to actually hand harvest the product.
